Graston Technique

Graston Technique

Introduction:

Graston Technique uses a variety of new medical instruments to locate soft tissue injuries in ligaments, muscles, nerves and tendons. Once detected, damaged areas can then be treated by using the instruments to produce controlled micro trauma. This treatment induces a healing response in the affected tissues and causes the rapid repair and absorption of scar tissue. As part of a holistic system of health care services, Graston Technique is effective in sports injury rehabilitation. The chiropractors and other practitioners at RE:FORM Body Clinic in the Byward Market offer clients in Ottawa and Gatineau evidence-based chiropractic, registered massage therapy, ART or Active Release Techniques, and medical acupuncture for injury prevention, sports therapy, and a variety of injuries.

Used to treat the following conditions:

  • Acute and chronic muscle pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Tennis elbow
  • Post surgical scarring
  • A wide variety of other soft tissue injuries

Possible causes:

    • Repetitive actions and movements:
If you perform repetitive movements at work or in your daily life you can wear down your muscles and develop chronic conditions such as carpel tunnel syndrome.
    • Sports Injuries:
Although sports are a great way to get (and stay) in shape, it’s not all that hard to injure yourself if you don’t take the proper precautions like stretching before a game. Sprains, strains, swollen muscles, torn ligaments and fractures are all common sports injuries that can become serious injuries if not treated promptly.
    • Accidents:
Strange symptoms can pop up quite some time after an accident has occurred. This sort of thing is very common – a delay of the occurrence of aches and pains that can be associated with a previous sudden and strenuous jolt to your body.

Benefits of soft tissue mobilization (Graston):

      • Promotes faster healing
      • Effective rehabilitation after surgery
      • Relief from muscle and nerve pain
      • Improved mobility and flexibility

      Sample Treatment Plan:

What you can expect for your first diagnostic treatment:
First a doctor will assess the condition with a case history and physical examination. Based on this initial diagnosis an integrated treatment plan will be developed to achieve a rapid and timely resolution to your condition

      Treatment Overview:
Graston treatments are quite deep-acting, and it is prudent to limit the treatment to twice in a week.

      Number of treatments:
Depending on the severity of your specific condition, positive results can commonly be seen in just 1-3 treatments especially for for conditions such as tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, and illiotibial band syndrome

Duration of each treatment: Graston Technique treatments last approximately 15 minutes.

      What should I wear?
You should wear clothing that allows access to the problem areas.

      Relief Expected:

Graston Technique treatments can give dramatic results in just one treatment; but you can certainly expect positive changes in 4-6 visits.

      Consequences:

Relatively light damage such as a swollen knee can become very serious problems if they are not treated promptly. The key is to have early intervention through a quick and accurate diagnosis, in order to start the healing process as soon as possible
